Pregnant women, especially they who are on the third trimester, should avoid to drink jamu made from Javanese chili or Long pepper (Piper retrofractum Vahl. syn. P. longum). This ingredient has effect to obstruct muscles contraction during labor.
Long pepper has piperine that an alkaloid has an effect to obstruct muscle contraction, so it will make laboring a difficult process for women, Prof Dr. Suwijiyo Pramono DEA Apt said during inaugural lecture ceremony in Faculty of Pharmacy, Gadjah Mada University, Jogjakarta, reported by Suara Merdeka.
He said that pregnant women, who consumed jamu cabe puyang frequently before laboring time, would have difficulty when they were laboring. This is because uterine muscles are blocked. Uterine muscle contractions were being blocked during the laboring time could increase the chances of miscarriage. Besides this jamu, jamu kunyit asam also should be avoided during pregnancy because it could increase miscarriage risk. Turmeric extract has stimulant effect on uterine contraction and has abortive effect.
