According to a lecturer at Institute of Health Science, PKU Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, Dewi Pertiwi, S.Gz, M.Gizi, mangosteen is useful for health. If we see its nutritional content, its meat contains various nutrition such as energy, carbohydrate, potassium, calcium, iron, folic acid, manganese, phosphor, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6 and water.
“Mangosteen is believed to heal various throat diseases such as mouth ulcers, tonsil, and it can also improve blood circulation, heals diarrhea, and dysentery. Consuming mangosteen regularly can help you lose weight because the substance in mangosteen can stimulate fat reduction in body because it is low calories,” Dewi explained as quoted from Joglosemar.
Besides that, mangosteen meat also contains manganese and vitamin C. Manganese is useful for fetus growth, while vitamin C is useful to maintain body immune system of pregnant mother so she won’t be infected by any diseases that can affect her baby.
Since there are many health benefits of mangosteen meat and skin, there is nothing wrong for us to consume this fruit. It tastes sweet and a bit sour. However, its skin is hard and bitter, so it is a bit difficult for us to eat it.
“That’s why we can try to make mangosteen juice or syrup. Besides that, in the markets today there are various mangosteen extracts or capsules available. They will make it easier for us to consume mangosteen skin, but don’t forget to watch the nutrition labels on those products,” Dewi said.
