Katuk (Suropus androgynus) is a plant that grows in South East Asia. This vegetable has various names in the countries in South East Asia, it is called mani cai (尼菜; Chinese), cekur manis (Malay) and rau ngót (Vietnamese). This vegetable mainly is known for its benefit to improve breast milk production.
According to research by Sa’roni, Tonny Sadjimin, Mochammad Sja’bani and Zulaela from Sleman, Jogjakarta, Indonesia in 2014, women who consumed katuk leaves had their breast milk production increased for 50 %.
People believe that its laktagagum that is responsible to increase and improve breast milk productions. This vegetable itself has been used by Indonesians for generations. They usually use the leaves as salad or boil them. It contains steroid and polyphenol that can increase prolactin level. Higher prolactin level will increase, and accelerate breast milk production. Besides that, katuk leaves also contains alkaloid, sterol, flavonoid and tannin.
It is easy to consume this vegetable. But we also need to make sure that the nutrition in this leaf is not broken. If we boil it for too long, then the nutrition will be gone.
