From Thousands Herbs, Only 21 Clinically Tested

Medication using herbal products are getting more popular today. However, there are not many herbal products that have been clinically tested in Indonesia. That’s why herbal treatment growth is not as strong as it should be.

According to Deputy of Biological Science at Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Professor Dr. Enny Sudarmonowati, there were many scientific studies about herbal plants and their benefits. However, there were only 21 herbal products that were clinically tested. These herbal products are called phytopharmacy. “It’s too little,” she said after Indonesian Herbal Product Development and Application at Swiss German University (SGU), Alam Sutera, Tangerang, Indonesia, Thursday (26/4/2018).

“Whereas if we see there are tens of thousand plant species in Indonesia, it’s very far,” she added.

Director of Standardization of Food Products BPOM (Indonesian FDA ), Drs. Tepy Usia, Apr, MPhil, PhD said the same thing. He admitted that there were only 21 phytopharmacy products in Indonesia.

“Phytopharmacy is herbal medicine without chemical material, but has been extracted, fractionated, standardized correctly, has been tested pre clinically, tested clinically and could compete with other chemical drugs,” Tepy explained to Health Detik.

Tepy said that there are three categories of herbal products. They are jamu, standardized herbal medicines (OHT) and phytopharmacy. There were more than 8000 jamu. However, there are only 64 jamu products that had been tested pre-clinically and got OHT labels.
