Rheumatic or gout is not only attacking old people. It starts to attack youth as well. And, treating this disease is not easy. Traditionally, cassava (Manihot utilissima) apparently has potency to cure gout.
Cassava is well known as people’s plant since many people here consume it, especially in mountain areas. This plant also can grow in fertile soil easily.
According to a herbalist, Ning Harmanto, pharmacology effect from cassava are as antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-tumor and to improve appetite. The most common parts from this plant that are consumed by human are the root and leaves.
Cassava’s root has calorie, protein, fat, carbohydrate, calcium, phosphorus, and iron. It also has vitamin such as vitamin B and vitamin C. While its leaves contain vitamin A, B1, C, calcium, calorie, phosphorus, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and iron.
“Its bark also contains tannin, peroxidase, glycosides, and calcium oxalate. All of these contents are useful in traditional medicine,” Ning added.
Most of the time, cassava is consumed as a food. In certain areas, it is used as carbohydrate source to substitute rice. But, apparently it has a function to cure gout. To treat gout, cassava can be used as internal and external medicine. To use it as an external medicine, prepare five cassava leaves, 15 gram of red ginger and whiting, crush all ingredients and add a little of water. “Mix all ingredients, so it becomes paste. Apply the paste in the areas of pain. And as internal medicine, we can use its meat,” explained Ning, who is also an owner of Ning Herbal in various cities in Indonesia.
Prepare two big cassavas, one finger of lemongrass, and 15 gram of ginger. Boil all ingredients with five glasses of water until only two glasses left. Strain the water and drink it twice, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
