Recently Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) students successfully found natural treatment for acne. This treatment was developed by Bintang Efrata Aprilia, Andika Fransiskayan and Mutiara Rahmawati. They created facial mask from seaweed and tea dregs.
“Our innovation is called Masrutam,it stands for masker rumput laut dan ampas teh (seaweed and tea dregs facial mask). It is a herbal facial mask,” Bintang said to Merdeka.com, Sunday (8/7) in Bogor, Indonesia.
Their research was funded by Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi (Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia) for Student Creativity Program (PKM).
Bintang explained that the herbal facial mask was made of seaweed extract (Sargassum sp) and tea dregs (Eucheuma cottonii). The research showed that the mask could prevent and reduce bacterial growth especially Propionibacterium acnes. The bacteria is the main cause of acne.
She said that seaweed contained active compounds called polyphenols. Seaweed could act as antioxidant because of the compounds.”Antioxidant is also found in tea dregs,” she added.
The combination of seaweed and dregs could produce a facial mask with texture and packaging that were as attractive as other facial mask on the market. “We have been testing Masrutam’s ability to slow down acne-causing bacteria growth,” she said.
Besides that, the natural bioactive compounds in the seaweed and tea dregs could make Masrutam become the natural alternative to smooth facial skins. “The antioxidant in Masrutam is believed to protect facial skin from sunlight exposure,” Bintang explained.
The idea behind this natural facial mask was because the team saw that beauty products on the market contain dangerous chemical substances such as mercury. “Beauty products that are using natural ingredients are the first choice today,” Bintang said.
